About St Hilda’s
St Hilda’s Church is a parish of the Church of England serving the community of Grangetown, and a Society parish under the pastoral care of the Bishop of Beverley. We are a warm and welcoming community - come and say hello. You are very welcome here!
Our life is centred on the Mass and the sacramental life of the Church, offered with reverence, beauty, and faithfulness to the Catholic tradition according to the Roman Rite. Children are very welcome at all of our services, and we have Family Mass every third sunday of the month.
Our services are especially beautiful, with incense and a team of altar servers each week. Whether this kind of worship is familiar to you or something completely new, you are very welcome to come and experience its mystery and wonder for yourself.
Who was St Hilda?
St Hilda of Whitby (c.614–680) is the patron saint of our church.
St Hilda is an important Christian figure in the north of England. Her influence spread far beyond Whitby and the North East. She was born into a noble family and was baptised as a young woman when Christianity was spreading across the country. Hilda later became a nun and eventually the abbess of Whitby. She was known for her wisdom, kindness, and strong faith, and many people came to her for guidance and spiritual care. She is remembered as a wise leader and peacemaker, and as a sign of Christ’s victory over the powers of darkness.

As a great Christian figure from our own part of the country, St Hilda continues to inspire the life and faith of our church today. Like all the saints, we believe she now prays for us and for our area before God.
